If you’ve been considering the Paleo diet, you may be intimidated by the restrictions, and you may be wondering what food you can actually eat.
Grace Heerman, a writer, yogi, and proponent of the Paleo framework, transitioned to a Paleo diet after experiencing significant digestive issues all of her life. Check out the November 2015 NHA Letter to listen to her story.

In Grace’s words, the Paleo diet is “a different way to think about health that isn’t low fat or low carb.” This diet is based on eating nutrient-dense foods that are believed to be what our ancestors ate.
On the Paleo diet, you don’t eat:
- Grains
- Dairy
- Soy
- Legumes
- Potatoes
- Processed sugar
As Grace says herself, cutting these foods out of your diet “sounds kind of intense and unrealistic. But in reality, what it means is focusing your diet on lots of fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, animal proteins, and healthy sources of fat to replace things that are less nutrient dense.”
So instead of those foods listed above, you eat:
- Fruits
- Vegetables
- Nuts
- Seeds
- Animal proteins (including meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs)
- Healthy fats
The benefits of eating a Paleo diet
Grace explains that it can certainly be daunting to start out on the Paleo diet, and that it can be a bit of a challenge at first. But the benefits of following the diet can make significant differences in your health.
For Grace, the transition to a Paleo diet meant her feeling stronger, maintaining more constant blood sugar levels, digesting food better, and feeling fuller longer between meals.
Some of the research-based benefits of the Paleo diet include weight loss; reduced cardiovascular disease risk; lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar; and feeling fuller with less calories.
